Governors and deputy governors allied to Azimio political coalition will not take part in the demonstrations against the government slated for Monday next week, Kakamega deputy governor Ayub Savula has said.

The deputy governor spoke after officially launching the 3rd edition of the Kenya National Culture, Tourism & Food Festival, Trade Exhibition & Conference in kakamega on Thursday.

He said the governors and deputy governors have been exempted by the Azimio leader Raila Odinga from participating in the demonstrations.

“We have sought permission from our leader Raila Odinga as governors and deputy governors not to participate in activities of Maandamano as the executive."

"So you will not see any governor participating in demonstrations in this country because we are not part of it as the executive but, MPs can take part,” Savula said

Azimio leader Raila Odinga has declared Monday, March 20 a public holiday.

This, he said, was to allow Azimio supporters to travel to participate in the mass action against what he termed as an "illegitimate" government.

"I hereby now declare today in the name of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance Coalition that Monday the 20th of March will be a public holiday," Raila said.

But Savula held that they have no powers as County government to declare a holiday.

He said holiday is declared by the national government through a gazette notice and so he was not aware of any holiday on Monday.
