Former Westlands MP Fred Gumo has dismissed allegations of bribery levelled against former Busia senator Amos Wako.
On Tuesday, Gumo defended Wako while speaking to journalists in Kitale town.
“I am personally shocked by allegations made by the IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati against former Attorney General Amos Wako," Gumo said.
He said Chebukati's claims that a team led by Wako went to the Bomas of Kenya at 3am to bribe the IEBC chairman were farfetched.
The former Regional Development minister said he was in company of Wako on the said date and time.
“We were part of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition leadership that was keenly following the proceedings at the Bomas,” Gumo said.
He wondered how Wako and team could have sneaked Sh400 million to the highly guarded venue.
“Besides IEBC commissioners and staff present, Bomas of Kenya was awash with armed security officers and members of the public who were keeping vigil," he said.
"How did Wako pass through with loads of cash without raising an alarm?”
He said it's shameful for the IEBC chairman to intentionally malign Wako who has had a sterling career in serving the country.
Gumo now wants the DCI to ensure Chebukati has been compelled to produce tangible evidence to substantiate the bribery claim.
He further accused Chebukati of what he termed as blatant mishandling of the presidential vote tallying process.
“The presidential results standoff could not have ended at the apex court had Chebukati faithfully led the tallying process.”
Gumo also lauded voters for conducting themselves peacefully during the by-elections in Kakamega and Mombasa counties.
“Despite the intentional postponement, which was aimed at giving our competitors some advantage, results from Mombasa and Kakamega are a clear manifestation that Coast and Western regions are Azimio’s strongholds,” Gumo said.
