Vihiga Governor Wilber Ottichilo has urged residents to invest in smart agriculture to attain food security.

He said climate change has affected the rain patterns that most farmers depend on to grow crops.

Ottichilo said it's time people wake up to reality and adopt new methods of farming.

“With that situation, we are likely to suffer from food scarcity in the country as most producers will not have much to supply,” he told the Star on the phone.

“For us to avoid such a situation, smart agriculture is the only way to go  to increase food production in the country.”

Ottichilo said irrigation is one of the methods that people should adapt to have continuous food production.

"Under irrigation, we are able to produce short-term foods that will sustain and increase our income," he said.

"We need to plant things like millet, sorghum, cassava and sweet potatoes."

Ottichilo also urged dairy farmers to invest in high yield animals to increase milk production.

The county boss said he has been supporting farmers by providing hybrid animals as a way of improving their livelihoods.
