A man on Tuesday was lynched by a mob for allegedly stealing a cow in Misikhu, Webuye, in Bungoma county.

Owner Juma Wandukuzi said he noticed his cow was missing from the pen at around midnight on Monday.

He said he launched a search but his efforts were unsuccessful.

"I made a report to my area chief. I searched all the neighbouring homes but my cow was nowhere to be found. I went to the slaughterhouse but it was not there," Juma said.

He said on Tuesday morning he went to Kamukuywa market and found a man with the stolen cow.

"I found the man trying to sell my cow," Juma said.

He confronted the man, attracting a huge crowd. The mob stoned the suspect to death and set the body on fire.

The suspect is said to be unknown to residents who wondered how he knew his way around their village.

Residents said there have been several cases of cow theft in the area.

They urged the police to increase patrols, especially at night.

"We are forced to sleep outside to keep an eye on our cows because the theft has become so rampant. We are asking the police to tighten the security of this area," Misikhu resident Susan Wanjala said.

Resident John Wakhungu told the Star they are tired of the theft.

"We are urging the police to do their job," he said.
