Malava and Shibwe hospitals in Kakamega have benefited from equipment from Milestone SportPesa Foundation to boost maternal healthcare.

The foundation has also supplied equipment to Seregeya Hospital in Likuyani subcounty.

The three hospitals were given equipment so women can deliver safely.

SportPesa donated delivery beds, ultrasound machines, nebulisers, bedding, suction machines and baby cots to the hospitals.

Since March last year, Milestone SportPesa has invested about Sh25 million in supporting maternal healthcare in Bomet, Homa Bay, Kiambu, Meru, Nairobi, Narok and Tharaka Nithi counties.

“A year ago, we launched our maternal healthcare support across the country to help women have access to clean, safe, well-equipped facilities. In one year we have seen the impact of this programme and remain committed to mothers, especially in rural areas,” SportPesa Foundation lead Esther Kang’ethe said.

"We have seen the need for incubators and other equipment to assist preserving the lives of newborns, especially preterm babies."

Malava Subcounty Hospital medical superintendent Dr Mohamed Munyendo lauded the foundation for the gesture.

“Healthcare is a capital-intensive investment. The national and county government can’t do it alone. The goodwill of development partners and corporates is needed to help bridge the gap," he said.

"At this facility alone, we have approximately 300 deliveries a month so the equipment can sometimes be stretched. What SportPesa Foundation has done for us today is a blessing."

Health executive Collins Mtemba urged other partners to join hands with county governments to improve the health sector.
