A fierce political battle is expected in Kanduyi constituency as the current MP Wafula Wamunyinyi faces off with his bitter rival Alfred Khang'ati.

The DAP-K leader will battle with Khang'ati who has rejoined ODM for fear of being rigged out of the new party.

Khang'ati is a former Internal Security assistant minister in the Grand Coalition government.

He was elected on an ODM ticket in 2007. Khang'ati unsuccessfully vied twice for the Bungoma gubernatorial race in 2013 and 2017.

Speaking Wednesday during an interview on a local vernacular radio station, the politician said he is an ODM life member.

Khang'ati said he will challenge Wamunyinyi, adding that he has failed to develop the expansive constituency which also hosts Bungoma town.

"People have approached me to come back and help them. They accused the current MP of failing them," he said.

"During my tenure, I established many development projects which are  visible. I managed to construct Mupeli Primary school, Bungoma bus stage, established Bungoma KMTC and the Sang'alo Cultural Centre."

He challenged politicians to engage in issue-based politics instead of party hopping as it amounts to lack of principles.

There has been a pull and push between Wamunyinyi and Khang'ati over who should vie for the Bungoma senatorial position, with each of them still interested in the parliamentary seat.

So far there are two ODM parliamentary aspirants in Bungoma county: Khang'ati and Moses Nandalwe of Sirisia constituency.

Others eyeing the Kanduyi seat include former Bungoma county assembly speaker John Makali, Nairobi-based businessman Wafula Wambanda, Wafula Wakoli and Bungoma-based businessman Mulunda Khaoya.
