Twenty-four students were on Wednesday arrested and charged in a Busia court for riding boda bodas in Busia town unlicenced.

Busia County Boda Boda Association chairman Washington Wabwire said owners who give away their motorcycles to unqualified people will be arrested and charged.

He said his office will take stern legal action against boda boda operators who “confuse young girls with money and make them pregnant” during the holidays. Wabwire said operators must have helmets, reflector jackets and a driving licence.

He urged them to follow traffic rules to the letter to avoid confrontations with traffic police officers during the festive season.

Boba bodas have been a major cause of accidents across the country, with some hospitals setting aside entire wards for victims of motorcycle accidents.
