Lawyer Oscar Oduor at his office / COURTESYLawyers in the North Rift are jostling for top positions ahead of the Law Society of Kenya branch elections slated for December 4.
Lawyer Oscar Oduor has already won the branch chairmanship after no opponent filed the necessary documents seeking to contest for the seat.
Oduor will be unveiled on December 4 as branch chairman, taking over from Henry Kenei, whose tenure has ended.
The branch secretary position, held by Cleah Karuga, has attracted several aspirants, including Catherine Akweyu and Evans Ego.
Current treasurer Bella Kinyua will see his position go up for grabs, with aspirants including Marion Rotich.
Oduor exuded confidence and a wide vision for the branch, saying he went for the position because of a sense of duty to LSK and the public.
“It’s upon all of us to ensure we have a vibrant LSK branch that will take care of its members,” he said.
“I also have a duty to the legal profession to ensure that we stand for streamlining all issues in LSK so that it becomes a body that will serve its purpose.”
He said members of the society look upon LSK to serve or help them where necessary.
Oduor has 10 years' experience in practice and had previously served as branch secretary general at the time Zephania Yego was branch chairman.
“Personally I believe that leadership is about leaving footprints when you serve and not just promises that remain unfulfilled,” he said.
He now looks forward to helping to hosting a North Rift Annual Legal conference for the region that will bring on board all stakeholders.
He said lawyers in the region need a library and he would rally members to donate books and other necessary material after setting up the library.
Oduor wants LSK members in the region to also help establish an academy for mentoring young lawyers.
“We will also work on the visibility of the LSK branch through establishment of an online podcast or YouTube channel, where we will share many issues,” he said.
