More than 100 medical experts have been mobilized to carry out a major three-phase free medical camp in parts of Elgeyo Marakwet County, where over 10,000 people are expected to attend for various checkups.
The medical camp is spearheaded by the Kagoech
Foundation, the lead organizer, in partnership with Lifecare Hospital and the
Elgeyo Marakwet County Government.
The camp will be held at three venues on
different dates within the next three weeks.
Organizers say it will be used to diagnose medical challenges faced by
residents so that they can be detected early and handled effectively.
Patron of the Kagoech Foundation, Dr. Micah Kigen, said they will also use the medical camps to mobilize residents to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA).
“We are committed to ensuring good health for
our people, and the camp will be vital in identifying some of the health
challenges that our people struggle with but have not been able to access
necessary expert advice,” said Dr. Kigen.
He said they would involve UHPs deployed by
the Ministry of Health to work within communities on healthcare issues.
“UHPs have deeper knowledge of communities and will help us mobilize residents, especially those with medical needs, to turn up in large numbers for the free medical camps,” he added.
Dr. Kigen said they fully support President
William Ruto’s healthcare plan for the country, especially the rollout of SHA,
which he said is largely benefiting Kenyans at the bottom of the pyramid.
“The President has also said the government will support very vulnerable people to enroll with SHA, and we will use the free medical camps to identify those who should be supported,” said Dr. Kigen.
The camps will start at Kamwosor Hospital this
Saturday, September 13, 2025, followed by one at Nyaru and another at Muskut.
Medical experts from Lifecare Hospital will
focus on orthopedics, ophthalmology, gynecology, general surgery, internal
medicine, and nutritional advice during the camp.
Dr. Kigen said they would also work with local medics from hospitals in the region during the free medical camps.
He noted that healthcare is a primary need for
all Kenyans and that they expect to serve all residents, including children,
the elderly, and people with special needs.
“Within our communities, we have people with
challenges that have not been diagnosed, and we urge all residents to come out
and benefit from the free checkups so that any medical issues can be detected
and handled early enough,” said Dr. Kigen.
Dr. Kigen founded the Kagoech Foundation over
20 years ago with a focus on uplifting community livelihoods, environmental
conservation, sports talent development, and healthcare programs.
“The medical camps will be purely
humanitarian, focusing on the critical aspects of healthcare for our people,”
said Dr. Kigen.
