Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya says he is focused on his role of serving the people at he moment despite pressure for him to formally join the opposition.

Natembeya said his priority now is to transform the county as the previous administration failed residents with nothing done to develop the region.

The governor said he would make a decision on when to join the opposition later but pledged to continue to speak out on national matters affecting Kenyans.

“Many are asking me why I have not joined the [former DP Rigathi Gachaua] and [Wiper leader Musyoka] Kalonzo team but I can not mix issues at the moment because I am elected as governor and have to discharge my mandate fully for the next five years as we move into the future,” Natembeya said.

He also played down perceptions that he may chart his own political course noting that he would do consultations on the possible way forward later.

Natembeya who spoke during an interview at his office said he was keenly following political trends in the country and would later make an informed decision.

“In Trans Nzoia, I gave a promise to the people that I would help fight poverty and that is what we are doing now through empowering the residents to participate in economic development activities,” he said.

The governor, who was last month arrested and charged over allegations of corruption, says he was emboldened by his arrest and vowed to fight off all political hurdles aimed at stopping his ambitions and vision.

The outspoken governor says no amount of intimidation or threats would deter him from pursuing his vision for just society where political leaders do not take advantage of the electorate.

The governor said his rise to a position where he can speak and many listen was because of God’s grace and the love from the people of Trans Nzoia and Kenyans.

“I was humbled that so many people were annoyed with what I went through more than myself. I’m so grateful for the support I received especially from the young people who were ready to do everything for my sake,” Natembeya said.

The county boss said what he always speaks about are known truth and wondered why he would be a target of those who thrive in the status quo.

He says Trans Nzoia is a rainbow county hosting all communities and urged residents to always value peace and unity.

“Lets avoid tribalism, envy, hatred, witch-hunt and selfishness because that will not take us anywhere,” Natembeya said.

The governor said unlike in other counties where officers walk around with huge sums of money, his officers were well aware of his stand on corruption, adding that he would continue serving the people  with integrity.
