Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya in Kitale town
Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has said he was emboldened by his arrest and has vowed to fight off all political hurdles aimed at stopping his ambition and vision.
He was prepared for the arrest because many people in high places had expressed frustration with his stand on some national issues, he said.
“What we need to know is that these positions we hold are just for some time and we have to use them well. It's about serving the people and not self-interest, including unfairly targeting others.”
Speaking during a prayer service in Kitale town, the governor said no amount of intimidation or threats would deter him from pursuing his vision for a just society, where political leaders do not take advantage of the electorate.
His rise to a position where he can speak and many listen was because of God’s grace and the love of the people of Trans Nzoia and Kenyans.
“I was humbled that so many people were annoyed with over what I went through more than myself. I'm so grateful for the support I received, especially from the young people who were ready to do anything for my sake," he said.
He said what he always speaks about are known truth and wondered why he would be the target of those who thrive in the status quo.
Trans Nzoia was a rainbow county hosting all communities, he said, and urged residents to value peace and unity.
“Let's avoid tribalism, envy, hatred, witch-hunt and selfishness because that will not take us anywhere.”
The governor said unlike in other counties where officers walked around with huge sums of money, his officers were well aware of his stand against corruption.
Since his release, Governor Natembeya works from subcounty offices after a court in Nairobi barred him from accessing his office at the county headquarters in Kitale.
“I believe the office is the individual serving in that space and hence I will be available to serve residents of Trans Nzoia from anywhere where I will be accessible as usual,” he said.
He would respect the court and avoid stepping at his main office for 60 days as directed.
“I will respect the court and anyone who wants to go to the office can go and check whatever they want.”
Natembeya was charged in Nairobi for graft allegations. He insists that the move is a political scheme against him because of the tough political stance he has taken on national issues and those affecting residents of Western Kenya.
“I was elected to serve the people of Trans Nzoia and I will continue to do so with dedication. I will not look back because we have to take this county forward.”
Last week the governor made a triumphant return to his county following the dramatic arrest and arraignment in court over allegations of graft.
He also made an extensive tour of the Western region last Tuesday as he sought to make political capital, attracting huge crowds in various towns on his way to Kitale.
