The Narok and national governments are planning to eradicate quelea birds that have invaded wheat fields.

Narok agriculture executive Joyce Keshe said farmers have raised concerns over the birds that are wreaking havoc on their farms.

She said the most affected areas are Nkareta, Ololulung'a, Naisuya, Ntulele, Katakala, Kisiriri and Olopito.

Keshe said the government is targeting to eradicate about four million quelea birds using chemicals.

She said officials from the state department of agriculture have mapped out areas where the birds stay overnight and the eradication plan will only target these areas.

“We have identified the roots of birds and we will only spread the chemicals to specific areas identified,” Keshe said.

She said the Ministry of Agriculture has provided an airplane that will be used in the spraying.

Keshe said chemicals procured to eliminate the birds might endanger livestock. She urged farmers, who reside in the identified areas to move their livestock for the time being.

She said Narok county is leading in wheat production.

Keshe said the officials from the department were still engaging the community on the ground to identify more areas where the birds hide and sensitive them on the effects of the chemicals.
