Turkana to host Senate Mashinani in September – Clerk

Turkana County will host Senate Mashinani from September 25-29 according to Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye.

The aim is to enhance the interaction between the senate and the people at the grassroot level.

Nyegenye on Friday said preparatory technical teams from both the County Assembly of Turkana and the senate are jointly working together to ensure an adequate level of preparedness to host senate sittings.

“We constituted preparatory technical teams from both the County Assembly of Turkana and the senate who have been working in tandem,” he spoke in Lodwar, Turkana.

Nyegenye said a report was prepared by a technical team from the senate and County Assembly of  Turkana identifying areas of strength, weakness, changes, and modification.

The Clerk led the assessment of the chamber, accommodation, offices, and committee room where to engage members of the public and other stakeholders.

He said the holding of senate Mashinani in Turkana is an opportunity for the people of Turkana County to see their legislature at the National level and interact with them.

 He also said it’s an opportunity for the Senate to meet people and see the state of devolution on the ground how’s working and what is not working.

Turkana will be third to host the Senate Mashinani after Uasin Gishu and Kitui Counties.

Turkana residents have welcomed the idea of hosting the senate Mashinai urging leaders to discuss matters affecting Turkana.

Joseph Epakan, a Lodwar resident has called the senators to debate the issue banditry attack in Turkana that has led to the loss of lives, and livestock and slowed development.

“We are excited to host the Senate Mashinani, I hope leaders will get time to discuss the insecurity issue in Turkana which is a thorn in the flesh. We have lost lives and livestock because of banditry attacks,” he said.

Esther Apetot has urged senators to debate the main challenges facing Turkana County including water shortage, poverty, illiteracy level, and revival of oil exploration.
