Eldoret police say they have recorded a tremendous decline in crime within four months due to improved working relations with the public in tackling insecurity.

Within the period there have been no armed robberies as was the case last holiday season.

Uasin Gishu DCI boss Peter Kimulwo has urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with relevant information to help fight crime.

“We have had a very close and positive working relationship with residents, leading to improved security in most areas unlike last December when there was an outcry,” Kimulwo said.

Speaking in his office, Kimulwo said the suspects involved in past crimes had been arrested and dealt with in court.

Governor Jonathan Bii has also praised the security agencies for working with the county government in dealing with all forms of crime, including the increased supply and consumption of illicit alcohol.

So far, more than 600 people have been arrested and charged in an ongoing crackdown on the sale of illicit alcohol and drugs in the county.

The police and county enforcement officers have intensified the crackdown, especially in slums around Eldoret town where production and consumption of illicit alcohol is high.

Uasin Gishu police commander Benjamin Mwathi said that in the last one week police have destroyed more than 10,000 litres of chang’aa and 10,000 litres of kangara as well as 1,100 litres of busaa.

Mwathi said some notorious distillers were arrested in Eldoret town, Langas estate, Huruma and Kamukunji.

The crackdown is ongoing in all subcounties in the region

They spoke as police recovered a gun snatched from an NSIS officer on April 10 at Cherunya estate in the town.

Kimulwo said two suspects found with the gun in a house at Yamumbi estate have been arrested.

Kimulwo identified the suspects as Kevin Mwangi and Bonface Biwott. They will be charged in court after investigations.

Kimulwo said the suspects attacked the NSIS officer and took the gun from his car as he dropped a friend at Cherunya estate on the night of April 10.
