ACK Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit has expressed concern over prolonged drought in Kenya, attributing it to environmental degradation.

Sapit called for concerted efforts from all stakeholders in rehabilitating main water towers in Kenya to restore weather patterns.

Mau, Aberdares, Cherangani and Mt Elgon water towers, Sapit said should be replanted with natural forest cover which has been destroyed by charcoal burners and hardwood harvesters.

Speaking at Kericho ACK diocese on Sunday, Sapit said rain patterns could not have changed had Kenyans taken bold steps in conserving water towers.

The church leader singled out Masai Mara Game Reserve whose future he said hangs in balance after the drop in water levels in Mara River due to the destruction of Mau Forest.

Ole Sapit, urged everybody to embark on environmental conservation, saying is not only a resposibility for the Kenya Forest Service.

He attributed the ravaging hunger in the country to the wanton destruction of Kenya's flora and fauna.

Sapit said unless remedial measures are put in place soon the country will turn into a desert.

The Archbishop said it's time for the church leaders to mobilise their members to particiapte in tree planting.

“The future of the seventh wonders of the world, at the Masai Mara which attracts tourists from all over the world hangs in balance” Sapit said.

He told all church leaders to initiate tree planting programmes besides spiritual nourishment by teaming up with KFS.

Sapit was hosted by Kericho ACK bishop Ernest Langat, Governor Eric Mutai and Ainamoi MP Benjamin Langat among others.

He said the church in conjunction with the county and national government have rolled out a programme to distribute food to drought-hit counties.

“We cannot sit back and watch our brothers and sisters go through untold suffering occasioned by the prolonged drought,” Sapit said.
