At least 700 members of Kenya Universities Staff Union-Egerton University branch have threatened to go on strike if their salary arrears are not paid.

Kusu national secretary general Charles Mukhwaya said the union has already issued a seven-day strike notice over unpaid salaries.

Mukhwaya said they have served the employer and the government the notice of strike.

He said some of their arrears date back to 2020.

Mukhwaya said if no action is taken to address their grievances, staff members will have no option but to strike starting this Wednesday

The official said the university council must start paying the staff a 100 per cent of their salaries with immediate effect as opposed to the current situation where they are paid in bits.

The union also demanded that university staff be paid their accumulated salary arrears without further delay.

While addressing the press in Nakuru, Mukhwaya told the council to reinstate and respect the staff's negotiated terms and conditions of service as contained in the internal collective bargaining agreement.

The union wants the university to negotiate and conclude the 2013-17 internal CBA that has been pending for over seven years.

Mukhwaya said they want their grievances addressed before the strike notice lapses.

“We shall exercise our constitutional right to go on strike without further notice," he said.

Egerton University has been experiencing financial troubles for the last 10 years and has been unable to pay its workers full salaries and other statutory deductions amounting to more than Sh6 billion.
