Bomet police have mounted a search for the driver of a vehicle that was involved in an accident at Sachangwan along the Bomet-Narok highway while transporting bhang on Monday morning.
The mangled wreckage of the Toyota passo vehicle was abandoned at the scene of the accident while fully loaded with six sacks of bhang.
Bomet Central police commander Musa Imamai said his officers were alerted of the accident by motorists and members of the public at around 5am.
He then informed traffic officers who towed the vehicle to the police station.
Imamai said they believe the vehicle was headed to Nairobi from South Nyanza and was being driven at high speed, hence the accident.
“The vehicle must have been speeding because of the extent of damages. It also rolled several times before landing on a ditch,” the police boss told the press.
He further stated that the driver and an occupant believed to have been in the car may have sustained serious injuries and were aided by well-wishers to a nearby health facility before being moved outside the county.
“Our officers have checked all health facilities in our region without success, they might have been moved to hospitals out of the county but we are optimistic we are going to nab them soon,” he said.
He added that the substance, which is in rolls has since been kept as exhibit, with its value set to be estimated.
The recovery of the illegal substance is expected to draw more discussions on the significance of road blocks along the major roads at a time inspector general of police Hillary Mutyambai outlawed it.
Most illegal drugs being ferried to various parts of Nairobi and Mombasa are said to emanate from some areas in Nyanza.
Road blocks along the Bomet-Narok route have in the recent past seen many culprits engaged in the business arrested.
