In Summary

• Tobiko says Sports CS Amina Mohammed has already approved renaming of the stadium because Ntimama was a Maasai icon.

• Aim of Sports ministry is to bring up the stadium into International Football Federation (Fifa) and International Olympic Committee standards by March of 2020.

The government will rename Narok Stadium after William Ntimama in honour of former heritage minister and Maasai icon.

Environment CS Keriako Tobiko said on Monday that Sports CS Amina Mohamed has already approved the change of name because Ntimama was a great leader.

He was speaking during a Maa-prayer meeting at the stadium in Narok town.

In the next two weeks, a team from the Sports ministry and national government will identify the works that need to be done to upgrade the stadium.

He said the ministry aims to raise the stadium to International Football Federation (Fifa) and International Olympic Committee (IOC) standards by March 2020.

In September, Ntimama’s daughter Lydia Masikonde urged former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to intervene to ensure the stadium is renamed after her father, a former Narok North MP.

Masikonde said the request has been made before but nothing has been done.

The former nominated councillor said her father was the undisputed king of the Maa community.

She said other regions have stadiums named after their heroes.

“I will ask all the members of Narok county assembly to pass a law changing the stadium name to Ntimama because of the role he played in fighting for the Maasai community,” Raila said.
