Property of undetermined went up in smoke yesterday after fire destroyed one of the dormitories at Chewoyet Boys National School in Kapenguria, West Pokot county.

The dormitory, one of the newest in the school with a capacity of 166 students, was reduced to ashes in the 5am blaze.

Principal Joseph Korir told parents that the police are investigating the cause of the fire.

He said all the students' properties had been burnt by the time the fire brigade arrived.

Korir assured parents that none of the students was injured as the fire started when they were in classrooms for studies.

The Parents Teachers Association chairman Tingaa Phillip told the parents "the dormitory and property worth millions of shillings were destroyed. Boxes, uniforms, bedding, beds and books were reduced to ashes."

The parents demanded an explanation on why the school has been experiencing "frequent fires".

One of them, Mansour Mohammed, complained that their children were sent at home to buy bedding every year after fire in the dormitories.

"This is the fourth time within three years the dormitory is being razed. We won't leave  until we get a solution. We are tired of paying extra money to cater for the damages caused by fires," he said.

The parents called for disbandment of the board of management since "it has failed to contain fires in the school".

Kapenguria MCA Maddy Plakou said parents are struggling to pay school fees. "The CCTVs were rolling, they should show us who caused the fire and at what time," he said.
