The Sh1 billon cancer centre at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret has been completed and will be opened soon.
Hospital CEO Dr John Kibosia yesterday said cancer and other chronic diseases, including heart ailments will be treated.
An additional Sh1 billion will be used to equip the facility, which is now the second largest public cancer hospital in the country, after the one at Kenyatta National Hospital.
“We will be able to treat cancer patients better than in the past,” Kibosia said.
Chemotherapy and radiography will be provided at the facility.
Kibosia said centre’s construction has been supported by several partners, including the Manu Chandaria Foundation.
The project is part of the ongoing expansion of the hospital facilities and equipment to improve its capacity to deliver better services.
Also being completed is the 100-bed Shoe4Africa Foundation Children Hospital, which will be ready in four weeks.
It will be the largest children’s hospital in East and Central Africa and has cost more than Sh1 billion donated by well wishers.
The project was initiated by Shoe4Africa Foundation CEO Tobby Tansa who raised the funds.
“Both the projects will be used for treatment and research activities so we improve our capacity to tackle various ailments,” Kibosia.
The hospital has also expanded its Eye Unit with modern equipment at a cost of more than Sh20 million.
The unit treats more than 800 eye patients a month.
“With these new machines, we now have a modern and well-equipped unit, which will tackle all kinds of eye diseases,” Kibosia said.
The new machines include laser and surgical theatre equipment.
Kibosia and the hospital’s deputy director Wilson Arwasa commissioned the equipment last week.
The hospital will now handle micro and macro eye surgery.
Kibosia said the hospital will focus on training more personnel to improve services in all departments.
