In Summary
Kisumu County Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has rolled out an empowerment initiative targeting women and youth, disbursing over Sh1 million to 27 community groups from Kisumu Central and Muhoroni constituencies.
The funds, raised during a recent fundraiser led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, aim to uplift small-scale businesses and stimulate economic growth at the grassroots.
“This grant is a lifeline for our women and youth. Let’s use it to revive businesses and spur Kisumu’s economy,” said Ruth during the disbursement ceremony.
She decried the burden of high-interest loans from informal lenders, which she said continue to stifle many micro-entrepreneurs.
To address this, Ruth called on all groups across Kisumu to join Okumba Shield Sacco, a financial institution she says offers affordable loans and a sustainable revolving fund model.
“Many lenders exploit our people with exorbitant rates. Okumba Shield Sacco is our solution; it provides dignity, access, and fair credit to our communities,” she said.
The Women Rep further announced plans to roll out financial literacy training for all beneficiaries, ensuring the funds are used effectively and sustainably.
“We’re not just giving money, we’re giving knowledge. This complements what NGAAF is doing. So far, over 800 groups in Kisumu have benefited from the Affirmative Action Fund,” she added.
Ruth also took a moment to thank President William Ruto and Deputy President Kindiki for supporting the initiative, describing it as a key component of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
“This isn’t about politics; it’s about empowering families and changing lives. We’re expanding Shield Sacco beyond Kisumu, so more Kenyans can benefit,” she said.
Okumba Shield Sacco is a community-based savings and credit cooperative designed to cushion women and youth from financial exclusion.
It offers low-interest loans and a member-driven development model.
“Our mission is clear: economic security for women and youth. With national leaders behind us, we are breaking barriers that have held our people back for years,” she added.
As the empowerment drive gains momentum, women and youth in the county now have a new shield both in name and in function against the grip of poverty.
