One of the three families that lost their kin in the Sunbeam Mall tragedy has narrated the last moment of their breadwinner before he met his death.
The Sunbeam Mall on Mfangano Street was invaded by goons, during demos, who looted the shop and later set it ablaze.
Bernard Mungai, a businessman who sells shoes, was in his shop when the tragedy occured.
His grieving family expressed their deep anguish over the devastating loss saying their keen made an attempt to escape but he sustained injuries which led to his death.
His wife, Lucy Nyambura, said after Mungai fell, he was still able to call her during which he informed her that he had sustained serious injuries that needed urgent attention.
"He told me he had fallen and that I should try my best to look for people to come get me out because the fire is almost getting to me," Nyambura said.
Mungai's son, Harrison Mungai said many tried to escape and some managed but others did not.
"Unfortunately for my dad, he was overpowered and that is when he went through the window and eventually fell," he said.
Harrison said his father was rushed to St Francis Hospital in the Kasarani area but he succumbed to injuries.
His wife said when Mungai was being taken in for surgery, he was and calm.
" I thought it was the effect of the medication they had been giving him. We were given a place to sit and that was when they came and told me that my husband had passed in the ICU," Nyambura said.
She said she has no one to depend on as Mungai has left her with two children set to finish secondary school this year.
"How will I educate them further?" a teary Nyambura posed.
She added that she also rents a place to live and has no building of her own.
His daughter Anne Wairimu Mungai said she last spoke to her dad on June 14 when he took her took school.
"Then I come back from school and I am told my dad is gone. I could not believe it when I heard the news. I knew they were lying to me, I knew I still had my dad," young Wairimu said.
Another man that died from the tragedy was Charles Njoroge whose burnt body was found a week after the building was torched.
