Rider killed, wife raped in suspected robbery incident in Mbita

It is suspected the attackers wanted money that had been generated from a fundraising

Police in Mbita are in pursuit of suspects linked to the murder of a bodaboda rider in Suba North Constituency on Tuesday.

The rider was killed by a gang which also robbed him of his motorbike and raped his wife.

The gangsters are said to have raided the rider's house on Tuesday at around 4am, seriously attacking him with a panga leaving him unconscious.

The rider was rushed to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital where died a few hours later.

According to a chief from the area, the assailants also disappeared with the rider's mobile phones.

The chief said the gangsters were heard saying that they wanted money which had been generated through a fundraiser a few days ago.

Prior to this incident, he had been attacked by a group of gangsters who robbed him of a motorbike.

His colleagues held a fundraiser to help him purchase another one.

It is suspected the attackers wanted to be given the money which had been generated from the fundraising.

“They did a funds drive to enable him to buy another motorbike. He lost his first motorbike in a robbery incident,” the chief told journalists.

“They gangsters resorted to raping his wife who was also hospitalised after the incident,” he said.

The official said they had got crucial leads for identifying the suspects of the murder.

According to police, security officers have started getting the names of suspects to aid in the pursuit.

Mbita Subcounty Police Commander Solomon Barngetuny said they are looking for the suspects.

“My officers have gone to the scene and I will provide more details after their assessment,” Barngetuny said.

The rider's body is lying at Homa Bay County Referral Hospital mortuary.
