A curfew has been imposed in Nyamira town and its environs following a series of attacks by armed gangs.

The curfew which will start at 10 pm will be implemented by police officers with the help of chiefs, assistant chiefs and nyumba kumi officials.

The resolution was made on Tuesday during a baraza with residents.

Authorities said more focus will be on Nyabite market, where an electrician was murdered by suspected gang members.

Justine Moturi, 45, was hacked to death while in the company of his wife Rael Kwamboka

The two were attacked just a few kilometres from their residence.

Five suspects arrested in connection with the attack are currently in police custody.

They are awaiting completion of investigations before they are charged in court.

Police are also pursuing a gang believed to be behind the attacks and robberies.

The suspected thugs murdered a primary school teacher from Nyamira town.

Residents have urged county commissioner Erastus Mbui to enhance security.

"We are not safe, we are getting attacked and killed by these gangs everyday. Our security agencies need to ensure our lives and properties are protected. This can only be done by dealing ruthlessly with these gangs,” said Janet Kemunto, a trader in Nyamira town.

West Mugirango location chief Livingstone Momanyi urged the residents to remain calm as investigations continue.

“We have five suspects in police custody in connection with the incidents and they are helping us with information that can lead to more arrests and we believe we will finally get to the bottom of this,” he  said.
