Residents from three villages in the Suba South constituency will have the ability to fight communicable diseases following the implementation of mega water projects.

More than 4,053 households will benefit from the projects which are funded by the Government of Japan and implemented by World Vision for Sh60 million.

The villages are Uterere, Kisegi and Kiwa Island. The first phase has been completed at Uterere.

The projects entail the construction of water treatment plants, water tanks and kiosks to enable residents to get clean water.

On Wednesday, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, Suba Deputy County Commissioner Sebastian Okiring and the Cluster Manager of World Vision Shadrack Yator launched the Uterere water project.

Omondi said the project will cushion residents from health issues which result from the use of clean water.

Some of the diseases associated with the use of unclean water include cholera, diarrhoea, typhoid, dysentery and bilharzia.

“The current has forced people to travel long distances in search of clean water. But the availability of the project will ensure residents keep at bay waterborne diseases,” Omondi said.

Speaking during the launch of the project at Uterere market, Omondi argued that poor health starts with the consumption of unclean and unsafe water.

The MP said the implementation of the projects is going to improve the health of the people.

He said the project would also boost the economy of the residents by cushioning them from spending long hours in search of clean water.

Yamaha Motors Company Ltd marketing assistant Anthony Muhia was also present.

“The long time residents spend on looking for water will cushion residents from wastage of time. The time saved can be spent on other economic activities,” Omondi said.

Omondi hailed the partnership between the government of Japan, World Vision and the government of Kenya which had enabled implementation of the project.

Yator said the project is going to enhance the sanitation of the residents.

This is through the inclusion of another component which involves the construction of toilets on beaches and schools in the area.

“Apart from supplying water, we are going to construct toilets at Uterere, Kisegi and Kiwa primary schools to enhance sanitation. We want to solve the shortage of water and poor sanitation issues,” Yator said.

Okiring assured the residents of the security of the project. He urged residents to own the project.

“I urge residents to own this project. Anybody who tampers with the project will suffer legal consequences,” Okiring said.

Muhia said his organization provided technical support when undertaking the project.
