Rarieda leaders have urged the police to stop harassing residents following the killing of their colleague by a mob in Oyude.

Led by East Asembo ward MCA Gordon Onguru, the leaders warned that the harassment is causing unrest.

Onguru condemned the killing of Inspector Simon Kariuki and called for the arraignment of the suspects.

Kariuki was attacked by an angry mob on March 14 during a crackdown on illicit brews.

He was part of a security team that had responded to a tip off that a woman known as Nyaseme, was hiding several cartons of illicit liquor and cigarettes in her house.

Police said the suspect raised an alarm, attracting a mob that attacked the officers with stones and crude weapons, killing Kariuki.

His Ceska pistol, serial number G3182, which had an unknown amount of ammunition was also stolen.

The pistol has already been recovered and a number of suspects arrested.

His colleague, Police Constable Wilfred Maina, managed to escape with injuries to his right shoulder.

Onguru said he has received numerous calls about the ongoing police brutality against residents.

In their attempt to evade the police wrath, residents have been forced to close their businesses by 5 am.

“Our boda boda operators and mama mbogas cannot feed their families at the moment because of the ongoing harassment. This should stop to allow people to go back to their businesses” Onguru said.

He urged the Rarieda police commander to use the energy to address other insecurity issues.

“Oyude has many insecurity cases. Last month, two security guards were murdered in cold blood. Residents reported the culprits, but up to now, no one has been arrested,” Onguru said.
