Marsabit boda boda operators benefit as micro-finance credit launched

Boda boda operators in Marsabit county are set to benefit following the launch of microfinance credit targeting them.

CECM Trade and Co-operative Development Adan Hirbo said the launch marks a significant milestone in the efforts to empower the boda boda sector and uplift the lives of young people.

He said the boda boda industry plays a crucial role in the local economy by providing essential transportation services and serving as a source of livelihood for many families in the region.

Hirbo said the boda boda microfinance credit will address their challenges by supporting the growth and sustainability of the boda boda sector.

"The boda boda operators will now have access to affordable financial products and services to meet their unique needs," he said during the launch at Bubisa.

At least 15 youths in the Shurr Conservancy area benefitted from the launch after they acquired 15 motorbikes worth Sh3 million.

The micro-credit fund is being run by Northern Rangeland Trust sacco in a programme supported by the French Development Agency.

"By providing the operators with access to microfinance credit, it's not only supporting their immediate financial needs but also laying the foundation for long-term economic empowerment and prosperity," Hirbo added.

Hirbo said the launch of the microfinance credit program by Northern Rangelands Sacco aligns with the broader vision of promoting sustainable development and fostering economic resilience.

15 youths in Shurr conservancy benefitted from motorcycles.

"NRT'S investment in the boda boda sector is not only investing in the livelihoods of individual operators but also contributing to the overall economic growth and prosperity of Shurr conservancy," said the CECM Trade.

He reaffirmed his department's commitment to supporting the boda boda sector by ensuring that every operator has the opportunity to thrive and succeed.

The Northern Rangelands regional boss Dida Fayo said his organization work with the communities to assist them cope with the effects of climate, alleviate poverty and bring peace to natural resource-based conflicts.

Fayo said the boda boda microfinance credit seeks to enhance business management by training them on entrepreneurship and training the riders on road safety.

"Boda boda operators should avoid being misused by selfish individuals. Embrace integrity and dignity," he said.

"The boda boda sector has grown into a multimillion industry and if well managed it has the potential to make even more money."

Torbi_Bubisa ward MCA Huka Galgallo urged the operators to embrace the culture of saving and investing in viable projects to boost their standards of living.

"It's high time for the operators in the Boda business to discard the daily hand-to-mouth routine that would only perpetuate poverty," he said

He cautioned the boda boda riders against alcoholism and drug abuse stating that the vices waste their precious energy, hard-earned money and time before rendering them impoverished.

" We want to urge you to spread the messages of peace and safety and be the champions of peace, safety and security.

One of the beneficiaries Ibrae Guyo lauded the initiative saying that would give opportunity to unemployed youths to access financial assistance.
