Parents are being urged to encourage their children to embrace foreign language education in their studies.

This, according to education stakeholders, helps young learners appreciate global diversity and expands their thinking horizons as they grow up to be responsible global citizens.

Kenya Private Schools Association CEO Rose Eteye noted that for quite some time, parents have not been able to appreciate the importance of foreign languages.

"Currently with CBC, we hope that this will change now that foreign languages have been introduced at the Primary level," said Eteye

Eteye was speaking in Kisumu during the Pearlson Language and Solutions Multi-lingual Festival for primary schools where a total of 15 schools from Kisumu, Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega, Eldoret and Homabay counties.

The festival had a theme of 'Embracing and celebrating Cultural Diversity,  Promoting SDGs awareness '.

During the event, a unique competition where learners from different schools showcased their linguistic talents in a variety of forms including songs, dances, poetry, raps and public speaking all in Fresh, German, English, Kiswahili and indigenous languages.

Flency Atswenje Director of Pearlson Languages said beyond the competition,  this event serves as a valuable opportunity for these young minds to practice and polish their language skills.

"By learning a foreign language,  students gain insight into different cultures, traditions, and perspectives from around the world. This exposure fosters respect, empathy and appreciation for cultural diversity encouraging students to become open-minded global citizens."

She said they hope to not only highlight their linguistic prowess but also instil a deeper understanding of the importance of embracing diverse cultures and working together towards shared goals as outlined in the SDGs.

"By integrating SDGs into extracurricular activities, educators can inspire a commitment to positive action and help children recognize their role in contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future," the Director added.

On the impact of the festival, she said this has been profound because it has ignited a passion for language learning and cultural appreciation among students from diverse backgrounds.

"Through participation in these festivals, students have developed essential communication skills, built confidence and cultivated a sense of global citizenship".
