Leaders from Nyamira County have been urged to stop politicizing education more so the issue of Nyamira’s upcoming University.

West Mugirango MP Stephen Mogaka on Tuesday castigated leaders from Nyamira who are currently differing on where the University will be situated.

He termed that as petty politics which should not be played especially in the education sector.

“We thank the President for allowing us to have our university. This is a milestone that we have been longing to achieve. I call upon our leaders to desist from playing politics with this important sector that has the future of our generation,” Mogaka said.

The legislator spoke when he presided over the issuance of cheques to university students from his constituency at the NG/CDF offices in Nyamira town.

More than 800 university students benefitted from the programme.

"We have heard some of our leaders argue about where the University will be situated. That does not matter for now. All that matters is that we have a university in our county and that is a plus for us. Let us avoid politics at all,” he added.

The push for Nyamira County to have a university of its own was initiated last year by Mogaka who called upon other leaders to join him in fighting for a university in the county as a way of having children get higher learning institutions nearer to them.

“Our children do well in examinations and after that, they travel miles away to get higher education simply because we do not have our university as a country. Let us have our university like other countries for the benefit of our children,” Mogaka said.

Mogaka had also brokered a deal with Kisii University School of Health Sciences to have a branch at the Kenya Medical Training College as a way of slowly finding a way of getting a satellite campus in the county.

Nyamira County has been without a University since 2017 when the only satellite Campus for Kisii University was closed down by then Education CS Fred Matiang’i for not meeting the requirements of having a satellite campus.

The satellite campuses that were affected include; Ogembo, Migori, Nyamira, Keroka and Kehancha.
