Nyamira to reduce Malaria infection to 1 per cent in two months

Nyamira County government is determined to lower the rate of malaria infection from 7.7 to 1 per cent in the coming two months.

Nyamira South, Nyamira North and Manga Sub Counties in Nyamira County are the leading Sub Counties with high rates of Malaria infection in the recent statistics

Acting health CEC Bernard Maina said 7.7 per cent is the rate at which malaria infection is currently taking place in the entire Nyamira County.

Maina said the distribution of mosquito nets across 169,000 households within Nyamira County will ensure low malaria infections as residents are urged to ensure they use the nets for the intended purpose.

The CEC further said that the Department of Health is determined to ensure the percentage of infection is lowered to 1 per cent.

This, the CEC said, will be achieved if only residents from the County utilize the Mosquito nets properly.

“This is not an infection percentage that we should celebrate about as a county. We need to work hard in ensuring that our county especially the three Sub Counties which have got high infection rates are monitored by sufficiently distributing mosquito nets to ensure the percentage comes down,” Maina noted.

Maina spoke at the Nyamaiya Assistant County Commissioner’s office on Wednesday during the official launch of a week of mass distribution of Mosquito nets to the residents of Nyamira County.

The National Malaria Control Board head of control program Kibor Keitany reiterated the importance of using mosquito nets by residents especially this season when the infection rates are very high.

“Let us all be responsible in ensuring this monster called malaria is completely done away with since it is now a life-threatening disease and hence residents should be keen in controlling this disease, which is causing even death,” Kibor said.

According to Kibor, Nyamira County becomes the third County to receive and start distributing nets, and they are targeting 22 counties where Malaria poses a threat to the lives of residents.

On his side, Deputy Governor James Gesami who presided over the function said the county is committed to ensuring residents get quality healthcare as part of what they promised residents during campaigns.

“We know we have a lot to achieve as much as healthcare is concerned since we know our residents require the best healthcare from our health facilities. We are working to ensure nothing is left out as much as taking care of our resident’s health is concerned,” Gesami noted.
