Five people dead as boat capsizes in Lake Victoria

Several people were saved but because of the huge waves the five perished.

Five people died after a boat they were travelling in capsized in Lake Victoria along Aneko beach in Migori town.

The incident happened on Monday around 4:30 pm when the boat was approaching the beach when huge waves rocked it before it broke.

Aneko location chief David Okoth Lwero said the boat had several people in it when the accident happened.

“Among those dead are five women and one man,” Lwero said.

He said another boat saw the accident happening and rushed to help those in the accident, managed to save several people but because of huge waves, the five perished.

“We did a head count and we have confirmed the five as dead, the area beach management unit and family members have stayed at the beach as the search for bodies is on,” Lwero said.

He said they are hoping for help from the Kenya Red Cross and the Migori county government to help on retrieving the bodies.
