Police have launched a manhunt for thugs who shot dead an M-Pesa agent in Kisumu East subcounty on Saturday.

Maurice Onyango died on arrival at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu Central where he had been rushed for treatment.

Kisumu East Subcounty police commander Joseph Obara said Onyango succumbed to injuries at the hospital on Sunday.

He said Onyango, who was attacked by three gangs at his shop in Mamboleo, was shot in the stomach.

“The deceased was reported to have resisted when the criminals attacked him,” Obara said.

The thugs who made away with an unknown amount of money, phones and other items escaped on a motorbike after members of the public raised the alarm.

The police boss said they had launched investigations as they were closely trailing the suspects to ensure they arrested and charge them.

He added that they have intensified patrol across the subcounty.

Kisumu City Residents Association Chairman Audi Ogada decried the increased cases of insecurity in Kisumu and called on police to be more vigilant.

He blamed a spate of insecurity on police laxity.

Ogada cited cases of phone snatching, robbery, car theft and hacking of innocent people while on their way home.

Further, Ogada said top officers who are set for retirement in the Kisumu county and regional level should proceed on leave as required to allow new officers to take over.

"We want to know why some officers destined for retirement are still in office. They should give space for young and capable officers to take over," he added.
