Fisherman drowns after jumping from boat

His colleagues mourned him as a hardworking and disciplined fisherman.

A fisherman from Kochia location, Homa Bay county has died after drowning in Lake Victoria.

Clinton Oguta died when he was returning to dry land with his colleagues after a fishing expedition.

Oguta, aged 28 drowned after jumping from the moving boat that was taking them ashore.

“He jumped out of the boat after telling his colleague that he wanted to swim in the lake water,” a colleague said.

 Ngengu Beach Management Unit chairman Caleb Oketch said Oguta drowned when they were about to land on the beach.

“Local divers and other fishermen managed to retrieve the body on Tuesday morning after the incident. Meanwhile the matter has been reported at Ngengu police station,” Oketch said. 

His colleagues mourned him as a hardworking and disciplined fisherman.

Steven Ouma, one of his colleagues said Oguta was a resourceful man in giving advice to members at the beach.

“We have lost an integral person in our midst. We will miss him,”  Ouma said.

His body was taken to Homa Bay county Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
