A 36-year-old man has escaped after allegedly killing his brother over a grazing field in Homa Bay.

Residents say Campes Ouma slashed his elder brother Erick Ooko, 42, in the head following a grazing dispute in God-Jope village, Lambwe ward, Suba North constituency.

Ooko had tethered his cattle to graze in a land that allegedly belonged to Ouma.

Assistant chief Fredrick Odero said his office had been receiving reports of disagreement between the two.

“They would argue over some domestic issues but this time round, I heard they fought over a grazing field,” Odero said.

The administrator said the brothers argued on Tuesday while at home before the killing happened on Wednesday.

Their argument became intense before they went physical.

Odero said the suspect was the first person to go to the field.

He was later joined by his brother, who accused him of grazing on land that belonged to him.

Ouma claimed his brother was the one encroaching, and they started fighting.

The suspect, who was holding a panga, later decided to attack the deceased.

“He hit him once with a rod he was carrying in his hand and slashed him with a panga. Ooko died on the spot following severe injuries,” Odero said.

The matter has been reported to Mbita police station.

Homa Bay county police commander Samson Kinne said he has sent a team of security officers to the scene to investigate.

“We’re looking for the suspect who escaped after the incident. Let residents cooperate and aid us in arresting the suspect,” Kinne said.
