Police in Homa Bay are detaining a man linked to the defilement of his 9-year-old stepdaughter at Nyatago village in Kobuola Kogwang sublocation.

The suspect is currently locked up as police together and officers from the children's services department are undertaking investigations.

Part of the probe includes a medical test report and mental assessment of the suspect before he would be arraigned in court.

“The girl has been taken to hospital for medical examination. We expect to arraign the suspect after receiving the report from the hospital,” Subcounty children officer Joseph Otieno said.

Otieno said preliminary investigations have established that the man warned his family against telling anyone about what transpired.

He said the girl opened up and explained to her teacher her ordeal before the teacher passed the same message to a village elder.

Area assistant chief Alfred Osodo confirmed the incident.

"It's reported that the suspect covered the minor's mouth with a piece of cloth to prevent her from crying for help," Osodo said.

The suspect was arrested on Monday after the girl complained of pain in her private parts.

However, the suspect reportedly committed the offence last week but his family, including his two wives and other children, tried to protect the man.

A resident said the suspect defiled the girl when his second wife and mother to the victim took their mother-in-law to the hospital.

"He sneaked into the house where the girl was sleeping and did the act. The matter came to the public after the girl complained of pain in her genitals," the resident said.

Later the girl escaped and ran up to her mother who was in a different house. The mother kept quiet about the matter after she explained to her what happened.
