Police were on Wednesday evening deployed to a newly built Nduru Level 5 Hospital in South Mugirango, Kisii to foil the escalation of violent protests by residents who were agitated by a plan to transfer medical equipment.

At least two people, a biomedical engineer and a driver, were severely injured during the incident.

The protests began at 4pm when the pair drove into the hospital allegedly to pick up the said machine.

The residents who turned up in hundreds, however, blocked the vehicles, smashing two in the melee.

A video seen by the Star shows one vehicle being vandalized by goons at the parking lot, near the entrance to the level 5 hospital.

Those injured have since been rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.

"We are currently attending to them though we have heard more others also with injuries are on the way here," a doctor at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital told the Star by phone.

The Star did not independently ascertain the nature of the equipment that was being transferred.

A staffer who did not want to be quoted, however, said it was for anaesthetic operations at the World Bank-funded health facility.

"The public had only gotten whiff of the plan to transfer the equipment and laid ambush pelting the vehicles with stones," said John Onsongo, a resident.

Other cars in the parking lot were vandalized during the protests.
