A section of Homa Bay county residents have criticised their elected leaders for skipping a prayer function attended by President William Ruto.

Ruto on Sunday attended a prayer service at the Africa Inland Church (AIC) in Homa Bay town, where he also conducted a funds-drive to aid construction of the church.

All elected leaders from the county skipped the function, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, her deputy Oyugi Magwanga, eight elected MPs, the senator, woman representative, and the MCAs.

Homa Bay secretary general for the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims Abadul Masud said attending the function by the political leaders was going to create a good picture of cooperation between leaders and the State.

He argued that members of the public had hopes that what Ruto promised would be delivered in a united way.

“Ruto promised to work with the elected leaders but its unfortunate the leaders were absent. He cannot know what they are supposed implement together,” Masud said.

UDA Youth leader Evans Oloo and businessmen Michael Odhiambo condemned the leaders for boycotting the function attended by president.

Oloo said the elected leaders failed them because they could have gotten opportunity to address challenges bedevilling Homa Bay people.

They claimed the leaders played cheap politics which cannot stand the test of time.

“The leaders are our representatives and they should have used the opportunity to lobby for projects which are beneficial to the people. They should have been there to show solidarity,” Oloo said.

Odhiambo argued that development requires good will of the state and president. He added that this can take place through interaction.

“We have national government development projects which should be done to completion in Homa Bay. Our leaders should liaise with the president to get his good will,” he said.

Ruto was accompanied by CS nominee Eliud Owalo, MPs David Ochieng (Ugenya), Mathias Robi (Kuria West), Marwa Kitayama (Kuria East), Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu), and Lake Basin Development Authority managing director Raymond Omollo.

Other leaders present included former MPs Silvance Osele (Kabondo Kasipul), Martin Ogindo (Rangwe), Dalmas Otieno (Rongo), Jared Kopiyo (Awendo), Nicholas Gumbo (Rarieda), Ken Obura (Kisumu Central), former Kisumu Senator Fred Outa and former LBDA chairman Odoyo Owidi.

Governor Gladys Wanga in a statement said that she failed to attend the prayer service because she received the invitation late, and was out of the county.

Wanga insisted she did not boycott the meeting.

“I would have attended the meeting but I got the invitation late. I had no problem with the President,” she said.

Others like Senator Moses Kajwang, MPs Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town) and Millie Odhiambo (Suba North) said they were not invited.
