Villagers in North Kamagambo, Rongo, on Sunday lynched a man after he killed another man who had inherited his step-mother following a domestic quarrel.
On Saturday night, Joseph Obong’o, 59, picked a quarrel with his wife identified as Mary Atieno over money to buy cigarettes which extended to his step-mum’s lover.
“The previous night at about 10pm he wanted money to go buy cigarettes and when I refused he picked a panga and chased me out of the compound. I had to sleep in a banana grove,” Atieno said.
She said in the morning, Obong’o who was still drunk after a drinking spree the previous night, found Charles Ong'oma Nyakinya, 66, chatting with his step-mum.
“He told Nyakinya to leave the compound and never come back in the homestead because he was against his affair with his step-mum, a widow,” Atieno said.
In the ensuing scuffle, villagers said Obong’o attacked Nyakinya with a panga and killed him instantly before fleeing towards Kisii county.
North Kamagambo location senior chief John Agoro told the Star over the phone that villagers trailed the suspect and spotted him in Kisii county where they did a citizen arrest.
“They brought him back home and decided to lynch him complaining he has been threatening others with death before,” Agoro said.
He said the two deaths have left the village in shock and mourning.
The bodies were taken to Rosewood Mortuary awaiting police investigations.
“Both men are from the same clan and their disagreement have plunged the area into double mourning only days to voting,” Agoro said.
