As campaigns for the August polls enter homestretch, Nyaribari Chache MP Richard Tongi has been busy implementing projects he initiated.

A spot check by the Star established that a contractor is on the ground levelling Amariba playground which is about 100 metres from Tongi’s home.

Bulldozers have been on the ground breaking huge stones to level the playground which will be used by both Amariba secondary and primary schools.

A perimeter fence has also been erected around the playground.

A contractor who was also given work to drill water at Riang’ombenene has finished works.

The project dubbed Riang’ombenene water project is aimed to serve residents who have been fetching water from springs far away.

Residents lauded the MP for the initiative while others questioned why he had to wait until the election period to complete the projects.

Tongi is seeking reelection for a third term and will be battling it out against Zaheer Jhanda, James Kenani, Veteran journalist Eric Obino, Vincent Sagwe, Chris Bichage and Kiogoro MCA Samuel Apoko.

Alfred Ondabu, a farmer said the water project came at the right time when women and girls have been covering long distances in search of the commodity.

“We need not blame the MP for what he is doing for the people. Elections will come and go but the project will remain for many years,” Ondabu said.

Speaking at a funeral in Riobara along the Nyaribari and Bobasi border, Apoko told off Tongi for letting people suffer for long before completing projects.

“I cannot understand where the money for the projects has been lying idle. Let the MP come clear on this so that people can understand. I am telling Tongi to get prepared to go home after the August polls,” Apoko said.

However, Tongi said his development track record speaks for itself and that is why the people trust him.

He appealed to the electorate to give him another chance to complete the remaining projects.

“My opponents have a right to criticise my leadership but they should understand that Nyaribari people know well what I have done for them during the two terms I have been in office,” Tong'i said.

He said competition is allowed during campaigns but those seeking to unseat him should focus on selling their policies and let the electorate to decide.
