A secondary school girl was thrown out of a speeding matatu in an alleged carjacking in Homa Bay.

The student at Dudi Girls Secondary School sustained serious injuries from the Tuesday evening incident.

Kanyach Kachar chief Bernard Omuga on Wednesday said the incident occurred after two unknown passengers carjacked the matatu at Rodi Kopany trading centre in Homa Bay.

The two criminals masqueraded as passengers entered the vehicle that was picking passengers travelling to Oyugis.

One of them sat in the co-driver’s seat and the other at the back.

When the driver and tout alighted from the vehicle with the intention of picking more passengers, the man at the co-driver’s seat moved to driver seat and drove off at a high speed towards Oyugis town.

However when the vehicle reached a bump at Ndiru village along Rodi Kopany – Oyugis road, the girl was reportedly pushed out of the moving vehicle.

“The girl will tell us the truth because some say the girl rolled after being pushed out of the vehicle while others say she jumped out of the vehicle after sensing danger,” Omuga said.

The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital in Rodi Kopany Township before being transferred to Homa Bay County Teaching & Referral Hospital.

It is reported that the girl sustained serious injuries on various parts of her body.

Whereabouts of passengers is unknown.

Omuga said the suspects drove the vehicle to an unknown destination.

“My last conversation with touts at Rodi Kopany revealed that the vehicle is still missing,” he said.

Homa Bay subcounty Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer Monica Berege said they are investigating the matter.

She said anybody with information regarding the incident and whereabouts of the passengers should report to them, to speed up investigations.

“The matter has not been formally reported to us but we’re looking for the vehicle,” Berege said.
