A suspect was found hanging inside Nyatieko police station cell in Kisii on Monday morning.

David Ondaro Nyamweya had a belt tied around his neck. Officers on duty said they were doing routine rounds when they found him dead.

Kisii county police commander Francis Kooli said the suspect had been locked up for stealing a motorbike.

"He was due to be taken to court today [Monday]," Kooli told the Star.

Elsewhere, officers at Igonga police station in Bonchari are on the spot for holding suspects beyond 24 hours before arraignment.

Three suspects, who were arrested last week on Wednesday, spent three nights in custody without any charges preferred on them.

By Saturday, the suspects — a woman and two men — had not been briefed on what they were being charged with, prompting Riana MCA Vincent Moisabi to send them a lawyer who secured their release on a free bond.

Moisabi accused the station officers of detaining suspects illegally  on flimsy ground and without trial.

Kooli said a probe has already started into the matter.
