Dagoretti North MP Simba Arati has called for free, fair and transparent ODM nominations to avoid defections.

Arati, who is interested in the Kisii governor’s seat, said the era of getting party tickets through the backdoor is long gone.

He spoke during a morning show on a vernacular radio station.

Arati singled out Kisii, where he said nominations have been a challenge because aspirants bribed to get tickets.

The legislator asked Senator Sam Ongeri, Janet Ong’era and Deputy Governor Joash Maangi to battle it out with him in the nominations.

They are all seeking to replace Governor James Ongwae, who is serving his last term.

“Democracy will be achieved if all those who have declared interest in various seats through the ODM party are allowed to participate in fair, free and transparent nominations,” Arati said.

The MP dismissed detractors who say he should not run in Kisii because he is from Nairobi.

“I was born and brought up in Kisii so I have a right to vie for any seat in the region,” Arati said.

ODM leader Raila Odinga has said the party's nominations will be fair, free and transparent, and will be conducted at an appropriate time.

Arati said if elected, he will revive pyrethrum and dairy farming.

“Governor Ongwae did his part but did not meet all expectations. I will pick from where will leave,” he said.

Arati said his decision to run for governor and not Dagoretti North MP will not harm his political career.

He condemned the destruction of computers in the offices that he has opened in the county.

“Goons can damage office property but this will not scare me from selling my agenda to the people of Kisii,” Arati said.
