A man in Sinyolo village, Siaya killed his wife and hid the body in a thicket behind their home.

The couple is said to have had a domestic disagreement that ended in the murder.

Gem police commander Charles Chacha said the 45-year-old man identified as Elly Ambani hacked his wife Margaret Inema Ambuka, 39, to death on Sunday.

Chacha who confirmed the incident said the woman's body was discovered on Tuesday, 30 meters from the couple's home.

He said it was already decomposing and dogs were feeding on it when relatives of the woman stumbled upon it.

"The husband disposed the body on Tuesday morning after it began to decompose," he said.

According to the OCPD, irate members of the public attempted to lynch the man but he was rescued by his relatives.

"He escaped the wrath of the mob but was later found dead at Sagam hospital," he said.

Police believe someone took the man to hospital following the mob attack.

It is not clear how he got to the hospital. However, doctors at the facility told the police that the man succumbed to the stab wounds while being treated.

Chacha said the wounds could have been inflicted by the mob.

Earlier, Michelle Achieng, a resident of the village, rung the deceased's sister, identified as Selina Julia Ambuka and informed her that the woman had died after taking a poisonous substance.

Ambuka reported the call to police at Yala police station.

She then proceeded to her slain sister's home, but couldn't trace the body. The husband was not around.

Upon searching the neighbourhood, with the help of villagers, they discovered the body, in a bush, 30 meters from the couple's house.

Police took the body to Yala Subcounty Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

Investigations into the incident have begun.
