Utumishi Academy has been put on the spot after
teachers allegedly assaulted a group of students and seriously injured them.
Following the move, the students and parents from the Gilgil-based national school are calling for the intervention of the ministry of education into the incident
The emotional parents who declined to be named for fear of victimisation said that they had reported the matter to the education offices following the beatings.
In a video that has gone viral, a group of students show marks inflicted by a blunt object on their thighs and back with a plea for assistance.
Addressing the press in Gilgil, one of the parents said that the students were beaten by a group of teachers for unclear reasons.
The irate parent said that there was scanty information from the school adding that efforts to have the minors taken to the hospital were thwarted.
“One student managed to pass the information to his parent by sending the video and we were in turn told but we have failed to meet the students,” said the parent.
Another parent said that the number of injured students could be higher and called for parents to be allowed to visit the school and get the real facts.
“This is not the first time that students in the public school have reported such incidents of corporal punishment and its time action was taken,” said the parent.
Gilgil sub county commissioner Ndambuki Mutheki confirmed seeing the video adding that he had even called the school Principal over the matter.
The senior government official said that the Principal had since denied the allegations adding that no student had been injured in the school.
“I have seen the video but the Principal has denied the students belong to the school as alleged and according to him this could be a ploy to discredit the institution,” he said.
Contacted on phone, Gilgil sub county education officer Eric Obiri said that no parent had lodged any complaints with his office over the alleged beating.
He was however quick to add that he would follow up the matter with the school and get to the bottom of the allegations.
“My office has not received any complaints about the alleged beatings of the students and any parent is free to visit us,” he said.
