Kisumu town is overgrown with bushes, providing breeding grounds for mosquitoes and the risk of a malaria outbreak, city manager Doris Ombara has said.

“The city has no funds to trim bushes and cut grasses, making it unkempt and unattractive,” she said in a protest letter to the county assembly.

Ombara says her department has not received Sh90 million allocated for development.

“We have pleaded for just Sh30 million for development projects but we have not been given any money” reads the letter.

The letter dated January 25 is copied to county secretary Humphrey Nakitare.

“Drainages remain blocked and filled with filth as there is no money to open them up,” writes Ombara.

“Most citizens are complaining of poor roads, potholes, unlit streets and yet we expect them to pay land rates, single business permits and daily cess.”

She says slabs on the pedestrian walkways are broken, posing a danger to residents.
