A survey by Infotrak that showed Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua is the best performing governor in Kenya has elicited mixed reactions from county leaders and residents.
Some Machakos MCAs celebrated the report, while others dismissed it, saying it is inaccurate and was made to glorify the governor.
County assembly majority leader Joshua Mwonga said the report “told the truth of the good work Mutua is doing in Machakos”.
“Now the people of Machakos and even the whole of Kenya can see what we have always stood for,” he said.
Mwonga said the time has come for those who have always criticised the governor to support him so that Machakos continues to be the best on development.
“This is the second year our county is being ranked number one on development matters,” he said.
Minority leader Thomas Kasoa said the report is a confirmation that the county government channels most of its money to development.
“There are those who have previously accused the governor of mismanaging public funds, but if this was true, I don’t think we would be ranked as the best performing county,” he said.
However, Muthwani MCA Dominic Maitha held a different view of the report, saying it is only based on the perception of some people.
He said none of the 28,000 respondents interviewed by infotrak are residents of Machakos and they gave their answers based on media reports.
Maitha said the county cannot be the best performing yet it has always failed to implement budgets as passed by the assembly.
In a media briefing in his office, Mutua said the report is a reflection of the development projects he has initiated in villages.
He said his leadership is based on service delivery and urged residents to shun politics and support the county government.
“We are employing a new policy of service delivery to our people and not the usual empty politicking that has dominated the region since independence,” Mutua said.
“All I ask from the residents is to pray for me and my government so that we can show that Kambas also have good ideas.”
