Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula officially opened the 41st Annual Seminar of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya on Tuesday.

Wetangula was the chief guest of the meeting in Mombasa County.

The discussions were centred on the theme of the “Accountancy Profession’s Contribution to National Growth and Development".

The seminar addressed critical issues facing Kenya's economy and the role accountants play in navigating them.

The speaker emphasized the importance of accountants in achieving financial stability and national prosperity during a time of economic hardship.

The discussions highlighted the need for innovative and collaborative solutions to overcome the challenges.

"This seminar comes at a crucial moment in a time that our nation grapples with economic challenges that demand innovative and collaborative solutions," Wetangula said.

Wetangula also highlighted the vital role that accountants play in steering our country towards financial stability and prosperity.

In a passionate plea, CPA Philip Kakai urged the government to "get moving" on the National Tax Policy.

"Our only plea to the government is to implement and operationalize the National Tax Policy and apply it in the Finance Bill to help achieve a balanced approach to the 2024/2025 National Budget," Kakai said.

Auditor General Nancy Gathungu in the meeting urged accountants to practice integrity in their financial reporting.

She added that accountants need to assist the government in maximization of revenue collection to address the growing revenue.

"Climate change is a global issue, therefore, as accountants, we should build knowledge on sustainable measures and be at the forefront of encouraging green accounting," Gathungu said.
