Bungoma has received Sh401 million for climate change action.
Jane Mukonambi, the county's Climate change director said the World Bank contributed Sh208 million to fund the initiative, which also received Sh112 million from GIZ and Sh80 million from the local government.
Speaking during the launch of the participatory climate risk assessment report and climate change action plan (2023-2027) on Friday, Mukonambi said identifying the hazards and risks to be addressed was done with the involvement of community members.
“From the community engagements we were able to draw the report that we have launched today. This report has also birthed county climate change action plans that is going to guide all the activities that we are going to carry out under climate change mitigation strategy,” she said.
Local communities will be involved in the efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change in Bungoma and neighbouring counties, the director said.
“We have already started implementing some of the action plans for example tree planting is ongoing. We are doing a lot of tree planting exercises in our county.”
The county has formed ward climate change committees that will drive the initiative.
Herbert Kibunguchy, the CEC for Environment, natural resources, water and energy said climate change is a global concern that poses a threat to the social- economic sectors, livelihoods, producer systems, resources and the sustainable development of the county.
