Wajir government has launched an initiative to enhance agricultural productivity and eradicate perennial hunger.

In the ambitious drive, the administration has invested in modern farm machinery that will be used to open more land for cultivation.

The machinery, which was deployed to subcounties, includes farm tractors, an excavator, a loader, farm implements and assorted equipment.

Governor Ahmed Abdullahi said the initiative is expected to revolutionise the agricultural sector.

“Our plan is to help our farmers increase food production and improve food security,” he said.

In the last financial year, farmers in Wajir harvested 33, 974 tonnes of produce worth Sh1.6 billion.

This was attributed to collaboration between farmers and the department of agriculture.

“This is a clear manifestation that our county is viable and rich and there is room to produce more to sustain our economy,” Abdullahi said.

Wajir is among the counties in Northeastern that experience severe hunger due to harsh weather conditions.

Floods, invasion by locusts and insecurity have worsened the food situation.

“Availability of modern machinery will not only enhance productivity but also alleviate challenges faced by farmers who engage in labour-intensive farming methods,” the governor said.

The county chief said he is committed tosetting a positive precedent for other counties, especially those in Asal areas.

“As the farm machinery initiative takes shape, farmers can look forward to increased support, improved productivity and a brighter future for the agricultural sector in Wajir ,” the county chief said.
