Northeastern regional commissioner John Otieno speaking to the press in his Garissa office Thursday last week.

Mandera has witnessed several attacks in the past month including the  July 6 attack on SOG Unit operators at Ogor-Weyn area in Mandera North.

The incident comes barely a week after residents in the Northeastern region were assured of their security against al Shabaab terrorists.

Last week, Northeastern regional commissioner John Otieno said the government had put up the necessary measures to deal with the terrorists and within a short time, terror attacks would be a thing of the past.

Otieno said the security officials in the region had brought on board all political and religious leaders, peace committees and elders to have a unified front against the enemy from across the border.

"We have heavily deployed security officers of different formations and they are doing a wonderful job," he said.

"I want to assure our people that we have started seeing results of the engagement we have had with the communities and leaders from across the region."
